Board of trustees 

 
NHS Confederation trustees are appointed to the board by the networks, Wales, Northern Ireland and the NHS Employers organisation.

All of the trustees, with the exception of the chair which is a part-time remunerated post, are voluntary.


Sir Keith Pearson JP DL, NHS Confederation chair

Keith Pearson, NHS Confederation chair

Keith was appointed chair of the NHS Confederation in May 2010 and shortly afterwards was awarded a knighthood for services to the NHS.

Keith has held chair appointments in the NHS dating back to 1998 when he was appointed chair of South Somerset Prmiary Care Group. He later became chair of South Somerset PCT and was chair of the Norfolk, Suffolk and Cambridgeshire Strategic Health Authority prior to the merger in 2006. Keith's most recent appointment was chair of the East of England Strategic Health Authority.

Keith is highly regarded for his healthcare expertise and knowledge gained through more than 30 years of working in the healthcare sector. Prior to coming to the NHS, Keith worked with BUPA for 17 years, five of which were based in Hong Kong as their chief executive. He moved on from BUPA to become chief executive of AON's operations in Thailand and then in Singapore.

Apart from Keith's work in the NHS, he is chair of the Tri-Base British American Community Relations committee for the Ministry of Defence, and the Health in Criminal Justive National Advisory Group for the Department of Health and the Ministry of Justice National Offender Management Service. Sir Keith has been a magistrate since 1999 and was appointed Deputy Lieutenant for the County of Cambridgshire. He is also trustee of Vivacity, Peterborough Culture and Leisure.

John McIvor, appointed by the Primary Care Trust Network

John is currently chief executive of NHS Lincolnshire, a post he has held for the past four years. He has been a chief executive for 15 years, with over 10 years previously in South Yorkshire at both Doncaster Health Authority and Rotherham Primary Care Trust. 

John has a particular expertise and interest in health inequalities; resource allocation; and partnership working. 

John has held other senior management positions at regional health authorities, acute hospitals and community service.

Shaun Clee, appointed by the Mental Health Nework

Shaun Clee has more than 28 years of experience in the NHS, having originally trained as an RMN before moving into management in 1990.

During his career, Shaun has been responsible for a number of high performance and innovative services. In 1989 he jointly ran one of the early crisis intervention services and in 1999, integrated community mental health services into a 'One Stop Shop for Health". This initiative won the best primary care development project that year. Most recently, the Department of Health recognised his services in a publication looking at the Ten High Impact Changes in Mental Health.

Shaun brings significant experience in both commissioning and provision of mental health; learning disability and substance misuse services, having led mental health services in South Warwickshire for a number of years.

Heather Strawbridge, appointed by the Ambulance Service Network

Heather has a wealth of experience and extensive understanding of large and complex organisations, particularly in the public sector. Prior to her appointment as chair of South Western Ambulance Service NHS Trust in 2006, she served as chair for Westcountry Ambulance Services NHS Trust, was a deputy leader of a county council, holding a finance and development portfolio, and a leader of a district council. Heather is currently chair of Connexions Somerset Ltd.

Heather's experience and working knowledge has been strengthened through her involvement as a governor of Bridgewater College of Further Education, her time as a director of Business Link Somerset Ltd and the National Associations of Connexions Partnerships Ltd.

Mike Parish, appointed by the NHS Partners Network

Mike Parish, NHS Confederation trusteeChief executive, care UK

Mike Parish was appointed chief executive of Care UK in 2001 following a successful career with Excel PLC, then a FTSE 100 supply chain solutions provider.

Mike joined Excel's forerunner, NFC (National Freight Consortium) as a graduate management trainee in 1982, just as it was being de-nationised. During his career with Excel, Mike worked in a range of industry sectors and was responsible for activities across Europe, the Americas and Africa, culminating in a PLC director role.

Care UK is a high-quality provider of health and social care services and works in partnership with public sector commissioners. Healthcare services range from elective surgery to diagnostics and primary care in a variety of settings; social care services include care homes and community care for a wide range of service users. Care UK is the largest independent sector provider of healthcare services to the NHS.

Steve Warburton, appointed by the NHS Employers organisation

Steve Warburton, NHS Confederation trusteeDirector of finance and business services, Aintree University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust

Steve took up his post as director of finance and business services at Aintree University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust in July 2006. Prior to that he was director of finance and performance, and deputy chief executive, at South Sefton PCT.

Steve joined the NHS in 1989 as a regional management trainee for the former Mersey Regional Health Authority. Upon qualifying as an accountant in 1993, he was appointed to a series of substantive posts at the Royal Liverpool Children's NHS Trust (Alder Hey) before being appointed deputy director of finance in 1998.

Trevor Purt, appointed by The Welsh NHS Confederation

Trevor Purt is chief executive of Hywel Dda Local Health Board. Trevor previously worked as chief executive of Heywood, Middleton and Rochdale Primary Care Trust and has a great deal of experience of working in the NHS and voluntary sector.

Colm McKenna, appointed by the The Northern Ireland Confederation for Health and Social Care

Chair of South Eastern Health and Social Care Trust

Colm McKenna, trusteeColm McKenna enjoyed a long and successful career in financial services, taking early retirement in October 2008. His final position was head of marketing services, UK, but he previously held the positions of head of group marketing, NI, and head of treasury and International Banking.

Mr McKenna was previously a member and deputy chair of investment Belfast (Belfast City Council) and member and chair of the NI Euro Preparations Forum (DETI). He is a business administration graduate from Manchester Business School.


Colm was appointed chair of the South Eastern Health and Social Care Trust, with effect from 16 October 2008. He is also a member of the BBC – NI Appeals Advisory Committee, Chair of the NI Assembly Secretariat Audit and Risk Committee, a non-executive director of ILEX Urban Regeneration Company where he chairs the Audit Committee, a non-executive director of the Northern Ireland Courts and Tribunals Service  and Chairman of Club Aontroma, the commercial organisation behind Antrim GAA. 

Lisa Rodrigues, co-opted, independent trustee

Lisa Rodrigues, NHS Confederation trusteeChief executive, Sussex Partnership NHS Foundation Trust

Lisa Rodrigues was appointed chief executive of Sussex Partnership NHS Trust in January 2006, prior to the establishment of the new trust in April 2006. Lisa has a background in nursing, with a BA in social psychology and an MA in public sector management. She is deeply committed to the trust's equality and diversity agenda, including tackling the stigma that is still associated with mental illness.

Previously joint chief executive of West Sussex Health and Social Care NHS Trust (from December 2001) and East Sussex County Healthcare NHS Trust (2001-2005), Lisa led the project to establish Sussex Partnership to provide mental health and related services across the whold of Sussex. This included a commitment to achieve foundation and teaching trust status within two years of establishment.
