Bookings have now closed. The only event of the series with places still available is the one in Exeter. You can book your place via the web page.
Children and young people’s interests must be at the centre of health and local authority services. Current reforms present significant opportunities and challenges in this area in this changing environment. The NHS Confederation has come together with the Child Health Development Programme, the NHS Institute for Improvement and Innovation, the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health as well as the Royal College of General Practitioners, the NHS Alliance /NAPC Coalition, the Royal College of Nursing and the Association of Chief Children’s Nurses to develop a series of regional events for commissioners, providers and clinicians across the health service and in local government.
The event will provide an opportunity for professionals to come together to discuss key issues, share good practice in improving child health across the system and to support implementation of the reforms.
Who should attend
This event is open to commissioners, providers, chief executives and clinicians in the health service and local government working on improving children’s and young people’s health. This event forms part of a national programme of sharing and disseminating best practice. The event is free to attend, but there will be a penalty fee of £50 for no-shows. If you book onto the event and then decide that you can't attend please contact the events team to cancel your place.
Posters presentations
We will be inviting delegates to submit posters demonstrating best practice to present at the event. If you are interested to submit a poster, please see this web page for more details and instructions.
Key themes
Each event will lead on one of the four themes (integrated care, general practice and primary care, safeguarding and children with complex needs) and have a ‘hot topic’ session on a current issue that will be of interest for delegates from across the country. The four key themes will feature throughout the programme at each event.
The focus of the London event will be Safeguarding. Details on the key themes:
- Integrated care
This theme will look at how multi-disciplinary teams can work to improve care. We will look at examples of best practice and where partnership working has delivered benefits to patients and improved outcomes. We will also look at how information is used to strengthen services, using care pathways flexibly, in transition from child to adult services, how commissioning in the new system can strengthen prevention and early intervention.
- General practice and primary care
In the advent of Clinical Commissioning Groups, this theme will focus on GPs as both commissioners as well as providers of services. 25% of patients seen in primary care are children and young people. This theme will look at improving care available locally for infants, children and young people, including chronic long-term conditions, bringing care into the community and close to home. Sessions will discuss improving thresholds and standards for quality of care.
- Safeguarding
A safeguarding for children and young people accountability framework and the consultation for the revised guidance of Working Together to Safeguard Children and the Framework of Assessment for Children in Need and their Families are planned to be published early 2012. This theme will look at what these mean for safeguarding across the health service and Looked After Children. It aims to explore strengthening partnerships between the NHS and local authorities and local safeguarding children’s boards, developing specialist knowledge and skills and commissioning designated safeguarding professionals.
- Children with complex needs
There are increasing numbers of children and young people with complex needs requiring complex packages of care. Maintaining quality of services during the transition to the new structures as a result of the health reforms is essential. This theme will investigate the continuing care of long-term conditions, including community services and making services effective across a range of interventions.
A young people's group or representative will be invited to present the keynote speech at the beginning of each event. We will also showcase learning materials such as RCPCH E-learning tool, e-GP and RCGP/NSPCC Safeguarding Children Toolkit, as well as the RCN nursing principles.
