Public Health: White paper consultations

In response to the Government’s Equity and excellence: liberating the NHS white paper, published on 12 July, the NHS Confederation is consulting with its members and key stakeholders on the changes to the public health system set out in the white paper and accompanying consultation documents.

Our public health summary for members sets out the key points relevant to public health from the white paper.

The NHS Confederation is keen to hear members and stakeholder views on public health and conducted an expert seminar on 23 September with representation from the NHS, Local Government and Public Health.

Public Mental Health and Well-being

In the last two years emphasis in government programmes and projects has been given to public mental health and well-being and the provision of services to support improved mental health and well-being targeted at shifting the focus of public service agencies towards promoting and protecting better mental health not just amongst the unwell but across whole populations. To help support the implementation of this agenda, the NHS Confederation in partnership with the National Mental Health Development Unit and in collaboration with SOLACE - Society of Local Authority Chief Executives and ADPH - the Association of Directors of Public Health is conducting research into the opinions of local leaders on public mental health and well-being across England.

The aim of the research is to understand:

  • Local leaders’ and opinion formers’ views and understanding of public mental health and well-being;
  • How high a priority public mental health and well-being is to their organization - its strategic plans, commissioning and service delivery;
  • How public mental health and well-being is being addressed locally, its related impact and outcomes;
  • How public mental health and well-being is being measured at local levels and;
  • The challenges and opportunities to improving public mental health and well-being

The project has surveyed and interviewed PCT chief or senior Executives, directors of public health and chief executives of local authorities, Mental Health care providers and GPs interested in public health and mental well-being.
