Sustainability

Foundation Trusts and Sustainability

We believe foundation trusts have a significant role to play in the sustainability agenda as large consumers of energy as well as major employers in their localities. Commitments to sustainability should complement foundation trusts’ core role in providing quality healthcare and their increasing role as an attractive and significant local employer in times of economic uncertainty.

‘Marks and Spencer’s Plan A – because there is no Plan B’ – A  Case Study

Marks and Spencer

M & S launched  its 100 point, five-year sustainability plan, Plan A in January 2007. They have produced a short case study for the Foundation Trust Network on the key principles of the plan and how the programme was developed. The case study covers stakeholder engagement, accountability, communication, piloting  and project management.

Making sustainability add up The FTN’s second sustainability publication ‘Making sustainability add up’ looks at how foundation trusts can account for sustainability and the work they have been doing in this area.

Accounting for sustainability – that is, measuring, reporting, and managing the social and environmental impacts of doing business – is now a strategic priority for foundation trusts. It is essential not only to meet changing regulatory priorities, and the demands of local communities, but also to understand and realise financial, reputational, and public health gains.

A trust-wide approach with full board backing is the starting point for FTs to take a strategic approach and take the initiative in overcoming financial and environmental challenges.

This is the second of our sustainability themed publications produced with Dane Pflueger from London School of Economics.

Making sustainability add up

Leading the field: foundation trusts and their approach to the sustainability agenda

The FTN’s first sustainability publication looked at sustainability initiatives FTN members had been involved with in their individual trusts. We talked to our members about the business drivers and obstacles of sustainability and corporate governance in foundation trust. The publication show-cased good practice examples from the FTN membership.
