The NHS Partners Network commissioned a short research poll of 1,000 adults in England to determine current attitudes to the independent sector. The research was conducted by telephone in September 2011 and the results presented to the NHS Partners Network Board in October 2011.

The NHS Partners Network last commissioned research in 2009. Since then the country has a new Government and the NHS and economy have changed significantly. As a result independent research informing us about current attitudes towards the independent sector is crucial to guide our work on behalf of members going forward.

In order to get an accurate gauge of how attitudes have changed the first question in this research was the same as in the 2009 research which was also carried out by Brunswick Research.

The findings in 2009 were strongly positive but attitudes have shifted significantly in the last two years as a result of a number of complex factors and the public have a much more negative attitude towards the independent sector today.

This research has clearly demonstrated that the public is highly sensitised on the issue. External factors that have led to large media stories, such as Southern Cross and Panorama/Winterbourne View have affected opinion. Additionally, language has been shown to be very significant with some words, such as “private” and “profit” generating a negative response.

Although the negative shift is disappointing the NHS Partners Network Board  took the view that it could well have been much worse and there are clear indications of how  to reverse the shift. The sector needs to take action to inform and educate the consumer as well as opinion formers. The research will form the basis of a broad communications strategy that the Network is currently developing. The recent presentation that Brunswick produced can be found at this link below:
