PCT Commissioning for Quality Seminar

29/05/2009
The PCTN held a Commissioning for Quality seminar on 29 May in London. This free event held at the Riverbank Plaza was facilitated by Jo Webber, deputy policy director and chaired by David Stout, director, PCT Network.

The seminar was attended by over 40 delegates representing their organisations, all members of the PCT Network. The seminar was an opportunity for delegates to debate the role of commissioning in driving quality of services and the respective roles of SHAs, regulators and providers.

A number of working groups, facilitated by Confederation staff was held throughout the day with a range of aims. These included the following:

Obtaining member feedback and comments to support the PCT Network’s response to Dr. David Colin Thomé’s review of lessons for commissioners in the light of the Healthcare Commission investigation into Mid Staffordshire NHS Foundation Trust. This follows from Dr Thome’s comment that:
“The NHS Confederation should consider how it can support PCTs through its network to develop their capacity and capability to respond to their role as local leaders of the NHS following lessons to be learnt from this review.”
To explore the role of PCTs in quality assuring providers and the barriers and levers in the system to support them in that role  To develop key messages for local and national systems to improve the role of commissioners in assuring quality within their local health systems.
