Working together to communicate the role of PCTs

27/11/2009
PCT Network hosted a successful workshop in Birmingham on 26 November 2009. Ipsos MORI joined the workshop to present findings of a recent survey.

'Communicating the role of PCTs' focused around the findings gathered from the work that the PCT Network carried out earlier this year with Ipsos MORI on PCT reputation. Chief executives, chairs and communications leads from our PCT Network member trusts joined David Stout, director PCT Network.

Patient and carerDan Wellings, director of public health research, Ipsos MORI presented delegates with the findings of their research. Dan was joined by Katy O'Malley, research manager at Ipsos MORI. The presentation highlighted current public perceptions of the NHS. It also looked at public perceptions of their 'local NHS' and the the awareness they have of the work that it does on their behalf. This includes PCTs and their role in providing services for their local communities.

Delegates were able to join the discussion and share ideas on how they were working to improve the way they communicate locally. Other issues that were discussed included the importance of how PCTs work with and constantly communicate with local stakeholders. These include local MPs and the media. The need to work with and inform local audiences within a trust's decision making process was emphasised. Delegates agreed that improved communication with the public, MPs and the media can help PCTs when important decisions need to be made in the public eye.

'Communicating the role of PCTs' is part of the PCT Network's programme of work to support members and provide consultancy advice as they strive improve the way they communicate with their public.

More information on events in 2010 will be available on the PCT Network website early in the New Year. Please contact martin.panther@nhsconfed.org if you would like a copy of the Ipsos MORI presentation or for more information on the PCT Network work programme.
