Confed member and partners launch groundbreaking initiative

Elderly care in north-east London is set to be transformed following the launch of Care City, a groundbreaking new healthy ageing innovation centre in Barking.

Established by Confed member North East London NHS Foundation Trust (NELFT) and the London Borough of Barking and Dagenham, the venture aims to deliver improvements in healthy ageing and act as a catalyst for regenerating one of London’s most deprived communities.

Care City, an NHS innovation ‘test bed’, brings together health and social care professionals with researchers, education providers, technology experts, small and medium companies and social entrepreneurs to look at innovative ways of delivering care in the community. It is a local initiative that seeks to address longstanding health inequalities linked to unemployment, poverty and lack of investment.

A catalyst for regeneration

The venture will explore a range of novel approaches to care, including an online tool for those with dementia; a social network app which offers peer-to-peer support online, with guidance from credible organisations and institutions; and a device which assesses falls risk and mobility.

Operating in one of the most deprived areas in the country, Care City will also act as a catalyst for regenerating the area, creating local employment for local people, and will be a centre where research is conducted into frailty and long-term health conditions.

“Where possible, we want to support healthy ageing and social regeneration together,” NELFT chief executive John Brouder and local government leader Anne Bristow write in a new blog post for NHS Voices, published on 25 January.

The Confederation, and particularly its European Office, have supported the development of the initiative, with representatives of both sitting on the advisory board.

Care City is one of seven innovation 'test beds' set to modernise how the NHS delivers care. Announced by NHS England's head Simon Stevens at the World Economic Forum, the test beds aim to harness technology to address some of the most complex issues facing patients and the health service.
