Clarity from JCVI on second phase of vaccination programme welcome

The NHS Confederation has responded to the UK Government statement on JCVI interim advice.

Responding to the UK Government statement on JCVI interim advice, Danny Mortimer, chief executive of the NHS Confederation, said:

“Our members will welcome this clarity from the independent Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation on the second phase of the COVID-19 vaccination programme. This will be vital as we look to protect the most vulnerable in our communities from the risk of serious illness and death.

“Across the NHS, including in primary care, NHS teams have worked incredibly hard to make the roll-out programme an amazing success, with 18.7 million people now having received their first COVID-19 jab, and more than 700,000 having had their second. This is an incredible achievement, and our members will work at pace to vaccinate those next in line, so that all adults are vaccinated by July, while also administering second doses.

“It’s important to remember that until everyone is protected, no one is protected. There is still work to do to administer first doses to all those in the first cohorts, as well as move down the groups until everyone has been offered a chance of getting vaccinated.”
