Reform examine public sector commissioning in new report

The report from Reform examines the state of public service commissioning, arguing that the way services are commissioned ultimately underpins their success. Reform highlight the imperfect nature of public sector commissioning and suggests that recent reforms mean that instead of addressing interrelated issues like health and social care needs, homelessness and drug and alcohol addiction, they have instead led to complex and often overlapping commissioning frameworks which fail to address citizens needs effectively.

CQC launch consultation on their five year strategy

The CQC is consulting on a number of proposals aimed at supporting delivery of its 2016-21 strategy and the next phase of quality regulation. Its approach is intended to be more flexible, in response to an evolving provider landscape, while also targeted on significant concerns and improvements. The deadline for responses is 14 February and if you would like to feed views into the NHS Confederation’s overarching submission, please email sam.hunt@nhsconfed.org by the end of Tuesday 7 February.

The OBR predict steeper increase in health spending than previously thought

The Office for Budget Responsibility (OBR) has produced the latest in its regular Fiscal Sustainability Reports. This looks beyond medium-term forecasts to consider whether the UK’s public finances are sustainable over the longer term. The OBR suggest that health spending is projected to rise from 6.9 per cent of GDP in 2021-21 to 12.6 per cent in 2066-67. This is a much steeper increase than in the previous report.

Resolution Foundation look at demographic changes and impact on state-funded support

This report, produced as part of the Resolution Foundation’s Intergenerational Commission, looks at demographic changes and how they may impact living standards in the future. It explores changes in life expectancy, their relationship with proposed changes in the state pension age and the various possible projections around ‘dependency ratios’ – the ratio of working people to dependents.

In her first major speech of the year, the Prime Minister, Theresa May, outlined a package of measures to transform mental health support in schools, workplaces and communities. The Prime Minister used the annual Charity Commission lecture to outline her vision for parity of esteem, stating that this can only be achieved if every institution recognises the role it plays in delivering this objective.
