In 2015, there were increasing concerns regarding the national shortage of paramedics in England and Wales, with one in ten posts unfilled. The shortage of applicants resulted in attempts by many ambulance trusts to recruit abroad, with trusts going as far afield as Australia.
A ‘Big Bang’ recruitment team was created at Welsh Ambulance Service NHS Trust and consisted of a senior HR business partner, two HR business partners and a communications specialist, tasked with identifying an innovative way to recruit 32 paramedic vacancies at the Trust. The vacancies were the result of increasing staff turnover and were a priority under the trust’s wider recruitment plan – 41 paramedics left in 2015.
