Disability History Month 2024
NHS Employers, part of the NHS Confederation, supports Disability History Month 2024 as part of its ongoing work with NHS England to embed the Workforce Disability Equality Standard (WDES) and ensure NHS workplaces are open, inclusive and a place where everyone feels like they belong.
This year, the focus is on disability livelihood and employment in the health and care sector, celebrating the 1 in 4 NHS Staff who has lived experience of a disability or long-term condition
Joan Saddler OBE, director of partnerships and equality, NHS Confederation said:
"Disability History Month 2024 is a vital opportunity for us to reflect on the contributions of disabled individuals and to amplify their voices.
This year’s theme highlights livelihoods and employment and shines a light on the challenges disabled people face in the workplace, including discrimination, accessibility issues, and the urgent need for supportive work environments.
It reminds us that fostering inclusivity is not just about compliance; it’s about valuing the unique perspectives and lived experiences of disabled staff as the NHS strives to attract and sustain its much-needed workforce.
By prioritising inclusivity, we can greatly improve the livelihoods of disabled people, enhance patient care and drive meaningful change within our organisations. Together, let’s commit to creating a more equitable healthcare system for all.”
