NHS Confederation responds to the launch of government trailblazer programmes to boost employment

Matthew Taylor welcomes NHS accelerator programmes under 'Plan for Change'

4 April 2025

Responding to the launch of the government’s first trailblazer programme in South Yorkshire to tackle inactivity and boost employment, Matthew Taylor, chief executive of the NHS Confederation, said:

“We welcome the launch of the first of nine inactivity trailblazers and three NHS accelerators programmes as part of the government’s wider ‘Get Britain Working’ programme under its ‘Plan for Change’. It is really encouraging to see health at the heart of the government’s plans to help people to stay in work or return to it, with tailored support available to them to make this happen.

“ICS leaders recognise the important role good work plays in supporting people to live healthier lives and reduce demand on the health system at a very challenging time.

"This new funding enables local areas to take a whole-system approach to prevent people falling out of work and to address the root causes of economic inactivity.

“ICSs are looking forward to continuing to work with their local partners to reduce economic inactivity through their ‘Get Britain Working’ plans.”
