NHS Confederation responds to the publication of the government's 2023 mandate to NHS England
Responding to the publication of the government's 2023 mandate to NHS England, Matthew Taylor, chief executive of the NHS Confederation, said:
“Leaders will welcome the publication of the government’s mandate to the NHS for 2023 and be pleased to see that calls for fewer targets have been listened to.
“The core objectives are sensible and already being worked towards by leaders, who continue to go above and beyond in efforts to cut waiting lists and recover performance.
“Levelling up the NHS’s digital maturity and infrastructure is important for it to be fit for the future and will not only reduce the administrative burden on staff but provide real opportunities to improve patient care through the use of new technologies.
“The priority to support the workforce is central to the mandate, and action on this comes in the shape of the implementation of the NHS Long Term Workforce Plan, which is still to be published. Until it’s released, the NHS will have one arm tied behind its back while trying to deliver against this mandate. It is clear the time for publication is now.”
