Tackling Inequalities Alliance

An alliance of EDI professionals committed to reducing inequalities and transforming the NHS.

18 December 2024

Evidence shows us that inclusive, diverse and accountable leadership, effective EDI practice, and the empowerment of communities, enables equitable service improvement.

The NHS Confederation is committed to supporting whole-system improvement by tackling inequality; we advocate for EDI professionals and are clear about their crucial role supporting coproduction with people and communities, that in turn supports effective decision-making within healthcare organisations.

We know that dedicated leaders tackling inequality also facilitate the development of an inclusive and supported workforce, further enabled to deliver high-quality care through co-designed patient services that meet the needs of all communities served.

In support of our commitment to service improvement through tackling inequality, the NHS Confederation are convening a strategic alliance, bringing together EDI representatives from across the healthcare sector, for the duration of this Parliament. Our initial focus is to input into the development of the new 10 Year Health Plan for the NHS.

This group will support the value proposition for tackling inequality in our health services; provide a clear strategic vision for what "good" looks like on this agenda by collecting sector-wide evidence and insight on key issues; and translate that vision into clear, strategic advice for decision-makers, to increase awareness and accountability; and achieve improvements for the NHS workforce and for delivery of improved outcomes for patients and users of the NHS.

Who we are:

A strategic alliance of EDI professionals, drawn from across the healthcare sector, convened by the NHS Confederation. We represent NHS leaders, regulators, unions, professional bodies and, crucially, patient views.

Our aims:

Inclusive leadership: to support the establishment of diverse, inclusive and accountable leadership across healthcare organisations.

Collaborative working to reduce inequalities:  to support systems to work collaboratively with all partners, to reduce inequalities across workforce and local populations.

Efficiency through EDI: to champion the clear link between effective EDI practice and improved productivity and performance for healthcare services.

What we do:

We share: the alliance meets quarterly to share intelligence on the current issues impacting the EDI profession. We engage in collective horizon-scanning and analysis of the current policy landscape.

We support: the improvement of the NHS by bringing collected insight to support thinking and decision making. We support one another by holding space to discuss concerns, emerging issues and challenges. We support the EDI profession by advocating for effective career frameworks and championing the role of tackling inequality at all levels of the health service.

We influence: we are clear that the role of this alliance is to present “collected views not collective views”. We present a powerful range of differing viewpoints from across the sector to parliamentarians and other key decision-makers in order to influence meaningful change.
