Responding to the government's announcement of an independent inquiry following the Lucy Letby verdict Danny Mortimer, deputy chief executive of the NHS Confederation, said:
"NHS staff have a particular sense of shock and revulsion at the news that one of their colleagues harmed patients in their care. This of course is nothing compared to how the families are feeling.
"The decision by the Secretary of State for Health and Social Care to establish an independent inquiry into the circumstances and learnings of this dreadful case is one that health leaders will welcome and support."
