Modernising the Mental Health Act
A summary of the findings and recommendations of the independent review of the Mental Health Act, led by Professor Sir Simon Wessely.
The independent review of the Mental Health Act, led by Professor Sir Simon Wessely, has concluded its work with the publication of a final report setting out over 150 recommendations on how to improve care for people experiencing a mental health crisis.
As part of these recommendations, the report calls for service users to be given a greater say in their care, for improved interface with the criminal justice system and increased respect and understanding for individuals’ cultural and religious beliefs.
The Mental Health Network has published this briefing on the review’s final report as a concise summary of its findings and recommendations, including proposed changes to CTOs, the nearest relative provision, hospital manager hearings, the introduction of a statutory care and treatment plan and calls for a sustained focus on improving the inpatient ward environment.
