Neighbourhood Health Community of Practice

Action Learning Sets for health and care leaders across the country, who play a role in the development of neighbourhood health in community care.

19 December 2024

We are creating a Community of Practice (COP) for neighbourhood health. As part of this programme, we will facilitate Action Learning Sets (ALS) for health and care leaders across the country who play a role in the development of neighbourhood health in community care.

The COP will seek to recruit those leading on the development of neighbourhood health at Place, community provider and PCN level and want to develop their leadership skills. The action learning sets aim to bring together colleagues at a similar leadership level and therefore we will encourage participation from members who are actively playing a leadership role in establishing and developing neighbourhood health programmes locally.

We are pleased to say that we can offer this opportunity free of charge, so we encourage people to submit a clear and concise expression of interest as we expect high demand. See below for further details on how to do this.

  • The Action Learning methodology is a collaborative approach to supporting individual problem solving, reflective learning, sharing and leadership development. Typically, ALS’ consist of 4-6 sessions and have 8-10 participants.

Action Learning supports a continuous process of learning and reflection based on the relationship between reflection and action.

    • Be committed to professional and leadership development
    • Have a specific ‘real life’ challenge or problem, relating to INW
    • Thrive through peer-to-peer learning, supporting fellow participants
    • Gain time and space for deep thinking and learning
    • Develop relationships with like-minded peers, supporting each other to solve problems and hold each other accountable
    • Become able to move from insight into action
    • Grow your confidence as a leader and self-awareness
    • Gain skills to carry with you in the future
    • Feel better equipped to lead and deliver neighbourhood healthcare.
    • Participants will gain the skills, capabilities and confidence to enable local shifts in healthcare closer to communities.
    • NHS teams feel better connected to others in their neighbourhood, creating more productive and quality services for people.
    • The COP will act as a trial for longer term approaches, which we may use for future influencing work.

How to apply

There will not be a charge for this initial cohort, but we will be asking attendees to share their reflections and experiences throughout to help improve and promote the programme.

The first cohort will be limited to 30 members and is available only to members of the NHS Confederation.

If you’d like to understand more ahead of putting in an expression of interest, please contact Helen Hunter who will arrange a short catch-up to share more information.

If you are interested in joining the initial cohort, applicants should complete an expression of interest (EOI), this will be followed by an informal conversation to discuss the programme and its commitment in more detail.

We will let applicants know if they are successful in early February 2025 with the programme starting in March 2025. The scoring criteria will focus on maximising peer-to-peer learning and building a trusting environment for personal development.

The deadline for returning EOIs is the 17 January 2025.

Please email helen.hunter@nhsconfed.org with the subject line ‘COP - Expression of Interest’ with your answers to the following questions. This does not need to be more than two pages and is an opportunity for us to learn about you and why you are interested in the programme. We ask that you answer the following questions:

  • What is your role and responsibilities for neighbourhood health?
  • What are you hoping to get out of the programme?
  • Why do you think your experience and insights would be useful to others in the COP?
  • Please share a high-level summary of the work you are delivering locally
