NICON Webinar: Exit Interview with Michael Bloomfield OBE

Michael Bloomfield is a highly respected public servant, who began his career in the Northern Ireland Civil Service in 1987. He moved to the Department of Health NI in 1997, where he led on the cross government Investing for Health Strategy in 2002, and the development of Secondary Care Policy in 2005, including the establishment of the Service Delivery Unit. Michael joined the Health Service in 2009 as Assistant Director of Performance in the Health and Social Care Board, before being appointed Director of Performance and Corporate Services in 2011 and Deputy Chief Executive in 2016. He was appointed Chief Executive of the NI Ambulance Service in 2018. After spending seven productive years in that role, he is now ending his formal career.
In recent years, Michael has also taken on a number of system leadership roles, having been Chair of the HSC Trust Chief Executives Group, Chair of NICON, and a Board Member of the NHS Confederation and Public Sector Chief Executives Forum. Michael is known to his colleagues as a values driven leader – he puts people first and balances vision with pressing delivery issues.
In this webinar, we will hear about Michael’s leadership story and explore his view on key wins and frustrations over the last decade. We will also invite his reflections on how we can now make progress both within the HSC and more widely across our public services. After the formal interview, there will be ample time for you to ask Michael your own questions.
This webinar is being held as part of NICON's 'Grasping the Nettle' webinar series, which will run throughout 2025. The series will aim to build on the momentum and theme of the NICON24 conference, held in October 2024, during which we explored what nettles need to be grasped to drive progress within the health and social care system in NI.
